I regularly enter my work in competition with other local artists -- mostly in the Art League of Bonita Springs. Many of the shows have a theme. For example the latest, September "16 was Geometric and Organic. Just up my street I hear you say. So I entered my large Owl and Daydreamer, both of which are drawn Geometrically but with an Organic subject. Result -- no prize of any kind, total failure.
Oh well.
Previous shows this year have recognised my geometric works but they didn't have eyes. Eyes are just my latest thing. They give my geometric abstracts some life and a little humor. But the judges either don't like them or don't understand what I am trying to say. I have often noticed that art judges
like last year's work and can't deal with today's. If I enter Indians for next year's shows I might win but by then I will be drawing something else.
All the artists I admire change their work every few years, producing better work. But when the new work appears their critics don't like the new stuff having only just got used to the previous stuff!
Examples; David Hockney, Damian Hearst and even Pablo Picasso, all suffered from this problem.
Not that I compare myself to these greats, but I work with my latest ideas whether appreciated or not.
So there!
Three of my latest to prove the point. Chief, My Magic Shield and Swirl. My current drawings show a tendency to be without eyes so who knows what my critics will make of that.
Shame on me.
I just won 3rd prize in the latest Bonita Springs Art League show called "Surf & Turf"
with my "Jelly Bean Blast"

It is 30"x30", ink and color pencil and full of movement.
I have just finished my first "Indian" commission. A family of four wanted a "portrait" of themselves in my style and here is the result. They loved it.

I have drawn a few owls recently ans decided to do a really big one, 30"x30".
The result is quite startling.
I haven't named it yet. Two possibles -- "SuperOwl" or "Whooo -Me?"
Please let me know which is best, email me, sargent365@msn.com.

Bonita Art League Members Show is this time every year and we all want to win it. I have featured in previous years but never got Best in Show.
Well, I didn't this year either. But I did get a Merit Award for my Indian.

But what pleased me most was that Sharon also got a Merit Award -- her first ever for this colorful acrylic Mexican Wedding.
I am a little obsessed by my Indians at the moment. These are really geometric abstracts of course. I have done three to date and am just working on the next -- a family of Indians.
I am still teaching graphite pencil drawing at the Art League and my classes are growing. I had 6 students then 7, then 15 and next weeks looks to be 12. They must like it. It's hard work with more than 10 at a time but very satisfying.
I was planning to tech a mini-course on OpArt Fun this week but it had to be cancelled as only one person signed up for it!

Two Shows in one month!

The top photo was taken at the reception for my Graphite Show as Visiting Artist in Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral. I've been lucky enough to be Visiting Artist twice before - once for my wood sculptures and then for my Spatial drawings. It's a beautiful gallery and they found room for 22 drawings including portraits, wildlife and buildings. This show can be seen until the end of November.

The second photo shows part of the West Elm contemporary furniture and accessories store in Coconut Point Mall. West Elm like to feature local artists and they selected 20 of my Spatials and Dizzies to show for a long weekend, 6th to 11th November. I was so impressed by the way my drawings blended in so easily into their displays!
Delighted to report my First Place win at the Black & White and Shades of Gray want Show at the Art League of Bonita Springs. It was a big show with lots of good competition which made it all the more satisfying.
I just heard that the trendy West Elm store in Coconut Point that they wish to feature me in their local artist series of shows. It will be from 6th to 11th of November with a Meet & Greet evening at 6.30pm on the 7th. will be showing Dizzies and Spatials and some of my latest, which I call African Masks and Sharon calls Peep-Po's! You can perhaps see why.
Illusions

I have just had a most exciting experience in a new gallery on First Street, Fort Myers.
I have 22 of my Spatials and Dizzies in the show which opened on the famous Art Walk
which is always on the first Friday of every month. This gallery has a different approach
to showing art. They made T-shirts of some of my Dizzies and they produced a video
of everything in the show, merging one into the next and accompanied by the pop song
"I'm so Dizzy". It was so entertaining and even more so when they projected the video
across the street at night onto a 3-storey building. It is very exciting to see your work
twenty foot high!

This drawing, ink on clayboard, is called "Great Balls of Fire" and it won second place at
the last Bonita Art League show. As you can see I like titles with humor!
I an currently working on a series based on an African mask I saw recently which reminded
me of my Dizzies in its shape and complexity. I did a black & white version but also a triptich
version shown here.
Pop in and see the beautiful furniture, fittings, window blinds and.......my work!
I have 3 drawings (spatials) and one sculpture -Touch -in the new Southwest Florida Arts Council Co-op Gallery in Coconut Point mall. Come and find us - next to Panera, so you can grap a cup of coffee as well. This gallery is huge and well lighted and full of paintings, sculpture, jewelry by the area's best artists, many of whom will be familiar to you as showing in the Promenade. Speaking of which we are still there! The new owner is painting and beautifying the place and we artists have been told we will be there, probably through the season.

I am also teaching at the Bonita Art League - a 5 week drawing course in January (starting 10th) and again in February, starting 19th. I show how to draw from your own photos and they can be of anything you suggest - portraits, pet portraits, local scenes, etc. I will demonstrate and then coach you with your own drawing. Very hands-on. Last year everyone said they had a good time and learned a few things and I was pleased with their results.
I am glad to say that I am very busy with gallery showings at the moment. Went to the reception at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers last week to learn that the All Florida Juried Show had 250 entries form which only 52 were selected to hang. So to have two selected is an achievement. This show is on display until beginning of August. (Corner of McGregor & Colonial).
I still have three sculptures and four Spatials in the Kathleen Bradford Studio/Gallery in Bonita Springs so my display in my studio at the Promenade is a little depleted. I just compelted another cute dog portrait and (at last) a cat portrait -- in fact two together, Molly and Bear which I have just sent off to the Nebraska owners.
Those two Spatials can be seen in the current issue of American Art Collector magazine as part of the Xanadu Gallery (Scottsdale) advertisement of a selection of their artists.Peter Sargent Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948196166102929262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7069854423938921186.post-81778483375177969822012-05-15T06:41:00.002-07:002012-05-15T06:41:16.160-07:00My wall sculpture is finished and hanging on my client's wall!
After hours of smoothing and several coats of wax it looks great and my clients were jumping up and down with excitement. That reaction is precious. OK, the check helps but the reaction means so much
to me and is why I love commissions.
On the Spatials front, I just heard that two of mine have been accepted for the Alliance for the Arts prestigeous Annual All-Florida Juried Show which can be seen in Fort Myers from 4th June until early August. Excited about that! A lot of wood carved away already. As well as what you see I am carving the backside to reduce the weight because it is ultimately to hang on the wall.
This photo shows the importance of lighting. Such a relatively flat sculpture requires strong side lighting to reveal its true shape.
I am very pleased to announce that my Spatials have been accepted by the prestigeous Xanadu Online Gallery. I have completed 20 drawings (ink and color pencil) and have 2 small ones almost finished. These vary in size - the largest 30"x 20", then some at 16"x 20" and smaller ones at 8"x 8". They are very colorful and strive to reveal spatialness, three-dimensions drawn in two, if you see what I mean! I try to achieve this in many different ways with grids, spheres, vanishing points and even hyperbolic parabaloids, and with shadows emphasising the spatial feel. I'm so having fun.

Second -- the Gallery. Kathleen Bradford Studio/Gallery is the venue and it sits on Bonita Beach Road (west from 41) conveniently near one of my favorite restaurants, Wylds Cafe. Kathleen came to see the 20 drawings and (she said) had a hard time deciding which not to have. She selected 15 or so and we discussed the layout. She has very imaginative presentation ideas and so encouraging about the work that it can't fail to be a huge success. Fellow artists have seen me working on individual drawings but few have seen many so the impact of the whole show is going to be a surprise.

Third -- invitations. Kathleen is of course dealing with publicity and inviting all her numerous clients and I have emailed and posted invites to all my friends, artist mates and past clients with a colorful card showing a few of the drawings as a taster.

I was excited this time last year when my wood sculptures were featured in the Gallery but I am really excited by this coming show. It is truly a New Direction for my work and my life as an artist.

Peter Sargent Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948196166102929262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7069854423938921186.post-11274029752785365622011-10-24T12:19:00.000-07:002011-10-24T12:28:59.364-07:00New Direction coming soon!I am very excited by my New Direction.
Spatial Constructions are drawn in ink and color pencil -- very vivid color pencil.
I have a one-man show planned for early January '12 in Kathleen Bradford's cute little gallery on Bonita Beach Road here in SW Florida.
I'm ahead of schedule with preparations -- 16 drawings finished ranging from the largest at 20"x30" to the smallest at 8"x8", all showing my sense of 3-dimensions in 2, if you see what I mean!
Watch this space for more detail later.Peter Sargent Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948196166102929262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7069854423938921186.post-68084099008386029712010-12-31T06:41:00.000-08:002010-12-31T06:54:11.106-08:00One-man SculptureShowI am very excited about my show which opens on Friday January 7th with a reception 5pm to 7pm. This will be in Kathleen Bradford's Studio/Gallery at 4259 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs, Florida 34134. The show runs until 28th January.
Come and have a glass of wine and see 10 of my sculptures set among Kathleen's wonderful mixed media assemblages.
I have been very busy for weeks with dog portraits, a house and a large drawing of Disney images from our last visit to Orlando.
Visited St Augustine for the first time last week hoping to photograph wildlife at the Alligator Farm but it was so cold it threatened to snow! Good shots though of the quaint old town and a very old sailing ship which will make a good drawing soon.
Come to my show!Peter Sargent Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948196166102929262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7069854423938921186.post-26099308807722415142010-11-16T05:26:00.000-08:002010-11-16T05:38:50.846-08:00

Great news yesterday!

Florida West Arts has its first National Juried Art Competition this week and my latest sculpture, Homage, won an Honarable Mention. Going to be a lot busier but should have more exposure. The popular Artwalk evenings will now be twice a month -- from 5pm to 8pm on the second and the last Thursday, and the studios will open until 8pm every Thursday. I am lucky to be sharing my studio with Ed Takacs (wonderfully detailed wildlife oils) so I can a few days off.
January next looks to be exciting. Kathleen Bradford has her studio on Bonita Beach Road and has asked me to stage a one-man show of my wood sculptures from 7th to 28th. Will be inviting everyone I know and will give more detail later. Incidentally, Kathleen is a very talented mixed media artist. She constructs these amazing, beautiful wall pieces out of glass, seashells, plaster, etc. Visit her gallery at 4259 Bonita Beach Road.
I have had lots of requests to teach recently. Now this is going to happen. also in January. I am the instructor for a two-day course -- Graphite Pencil Drawing from Photos -- on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd, 9am to noon. Anyone interested should pop into the Bonita Art League and sign-up!Peter Sargent Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948196166102929262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7069854423938921186.post-25224386438387501172010-10-01T09:11:00.000-07:002010-10-01T09:35:38.426-07:00We had the monthly ArtWalk last evening at the Promenade, here in Bonita Springs. It was an excellent turnout and as usual a mixed bag of old friends, fellow artists and lots of compliments but, alas, no sales. It's the economy, you know.
I sold a color pencil commission in September for an Art League member who wanted an Anhinga -- that amazing bird that swims under water to spear it's fish dinner. She wanted the pose with the wings outstretched to dry in the sun and that's what I did.
Someone told me they had seen a recent newspaper article about me in the local press. I had supplied information recently but didn't believe it had been used yet so I googled. Amazing how many Peter Sargents there are! My webpage was mentioned but some of the others sound fascinating -- a racing driver, a college dean, a bankruptcy specialist (!) and of course John Singer Sargent who I don't believe is a relative. Wish he was.
Just completed a house drawing and have started another, this one a brand new home on a site without any landscaping. Houses look all wrong without landscaping so I created trees and bushes -- one advantage of a drawing rather than a photo.
Having been alone in my Promenade studio for the last few months I am about to share with my friend Ed Takacs who paints beautifully detailed and startlingly realistic wildlife in oil and acrylics. Ed is a character so its going to be interesting.....
One last story. At the ArtWalk this gentleman looks at my drawings and comments; "These are very good. Almost as good as my work....and that's a compliment." (?)Peter Sargent Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948196166102929262noreply@blogger.com0
